Henderson and Whitesell Steamroll to Victory in Virginia Beach
After three straight days of rain, the clouds finally parted in Virginia Beach, making way for some amazing beach tennis competition. Local talent came out in droves, but in the end it was pro beach tennis journeymen Phil Whitesell and Chris Henderson (Charleston, SC) who prevailed, defeating Johann Vavarud and Niclas Kohler (Virginia Beach, VA), 8-2, to win the Men’s Pro division. Vavarud and Kohler were consistently sharp throughout the weekend and battled their way through the semifinals, defeating Martin Black and Ryan Davidson (Virginia Beach, VA), 8-6.
Other Virginia Beach-area Men’s Pro division teams of note this weekend included Alfredo Galvez and Yakov Diskin, and Guillermo Becerra and Ricky Lowy, who also competed in (and won) the Amateur Paddle division.
Charlene Haarhoff and Nadine Fahoum defeated Linda Zaragosa and Megan Plinktin in the Women’s Pro division, 8-6, earning them a spot at the 2009 National Beach Tennis Championship.
