Evolution Home Theatre's Beach Tennis Smash Brings Out San Diego’s Best Beach Tennis Talent
Beach tennis fans in San Diego were witness to some of the most exciting pro competition thus far on the BTUSA 2008 National Tour. In the Men’s Pro division, beach tennis veteran Mike Fedderly, along with new partner Glenn Erickson (Palm Desert, CA), defeated Donny Young and Marty Salokas (Hermosa Beach, CA), 9-7. Fedderly, the winner of last year’s San Diego Smash was in top form, and he and Erickson clearly have their eye on the National Championship trophy.
Also competing in the Men’s Pro division were 2007 SoCal Series Slam champ Joe Testa (Hermosa Beach, CA) and new partner Bertrand Coulet (France), who lost to Salokas and Young in a dramatic semi-final dual, 8-6.
The Women’s pro division yielded the most aggressive play we’ve seen to date. In the finals, the Maloney Sisters—Lisa and Laura (San Diego) defeated world class tennis veteran Gretchen Magers and her partner Debbie Nasim, 9-7. Magers and Nasim had to battle through a grueling 9-7 victory in the semifinals against WTA veterans Caroline Vis and Patricia Tarabini. For the Maloney Sisters it was their second tour victory this year, putting them resoundingly in the #1-ranked spot in the Pro Women’s division.
The event drew many former top-ranked WTA players, including Gretchen Magers (former #14-ranked singles), Debbie Nasim (Acura Classic winner), Caroline Vis (former #9-ranked doubles), Patricia Tarabini (former #12-ranked doubles), Cammy McGregor, and Terry Holladay.
