Local Athletes Excel At San Diego Smash
Beach Tennis USA wrapped up the first stop of its SoCal Point Series this weekend in San Diego. The San Diego Smash yielded some exciting beach tennis action and showcased a wealth of local talent, as both veterans and newcomers to the hybrid sport competed in the daylong event.
The Men's Pro division featured West Coast versus East Coast match-up as Ken Kuperstein and Mike Fedderly (both of Palm Desert, CA) faced Mike Edison (Clearwater, FL) and Brett Johnson (Daytona Beach, FL). The California pair dominated, winning 8-3, capturing the first points of the series and ensuring a them spot in the National Championships, in Long Beach, NY, September 1-2.
In the Women’s Pro division, former Wimbledon singles quarter-finalist, Gretchen Magers (San Diego, CA), and partner Lindsey Buechler (Del Mar, CA) defeated Monica Sweet and Darice Carnaje (both of San Diego, CA) 8-3, guaranteeing them a bid to the National Championships as well.
