As Beach Tennis USA Returns to Virginia Beach
Beach Tennis USA held its second annual tournament in Virginia Beach on June 10-11. Once again, the Virginia Beach Open was held at the North American Sand Soccer Championships.
In the Men’s Pro Division, Rush Cole of Hampton and Darryl Cummings of Norfolk upset defending champions Alex Cancado and Johan Varvenud, both of Norfolk, by a score of 8-6 to take home the first place trophy and $1,000 prize. Cancado and Varvenud, who won the event last year, looked like they would repeat after winning all their qualifying matches, but Cole and Cummings used a dominating blend of power and finesse to capture the title. The winners automatically qualify to compete at the 2006 U.S. Beach Tennis Open championship tournament in Long Beach, New York, September 2-3.
In the Women’s Pro Division, Bonnie Holt and Sharon Brown, both of Virginia Beach, easily took all four of their matches to capture first place. Holt and Brown split $1,000 for their efforts.
Craig Collins and Tripp Helig, both of Norfolk, won the Men’s Amateur Division.
